Kazimierz III Wielki (Casimir III the Great), who ruled Poland in the 1300s and transformed it into a rich and powerful nation, is remembered by Poles as the guy who welcomed Jews into the country. He made it against the law to kidnap Jewish kids and baptize them as Christians. What a guy! The neighborhood where we stayed in Krakow, once a largely Jewish area, was called Kazimierz in his honor, and here he is carved in salt underground in the Wieliczka Salt Mine.
