Lunch that day in Krakow was at Gruszka Nowa (New Pear), where I had the chicken with pearl barley, parsley pesto, and spicy caramelized carrots. The main reason I chose this place was the amazing location right off of the main square with horse-drawn carriages clomping by and outdoor seating right on the street, but the complimentary bread with lard spread didn’t hurt, either. Poland is also where I became hopelessly addicted to sparkling water, partly because “woda gazowana” is so fun to say. That blue bottle is a liter that I basically finished myself in the five minutes before our bread arrived.
