Warsaw’s Palace of Culture and Science, the tallest building in Poland, was a gift from Stalin in Russia in 1955 to impress the Poles with the wealth of Communism. But at this point, Warsaw was still in ruins from World War II, so it was kiiiiiiiiind of gauche to drop this giant fancy building in the middle of a bombed-out neighborhood. On the other hand, constructing it gave jobs to thousands of Poles, and it’s now filled with museums, a theater, and some really cute bars where young artists hang out.
