One of Europe’s red squirrels in Warsaw’s Łazienki Park, which my boyfriend says is the Central Park of Warsaw. It was designed in the 17th century, and the name translates to “baths park” because of the public baths that were here. But “łazienki” also translates to “bathrooms”, so I enjoyed calling this Bathroom Park.

≫ Next: The pałac Łazienkowski (or Palace on the Isle) in Łazienki Park was originally a bathhouse built in the 1600s, but it became the Polish king’s summer residence in the 1700s. My boyfriend’s uncle was the director of Łazienki Park until his recent death, so Jack got to spend his visits back to Poland living in the castle apartment and running around the park after hours. I’ve seen old home movies of him unwrapping Christmas gifts . . . in a castle.

≪ Previous: Back from visiting his family outside of the city, my boyfriend and I had dinner at Zapiecek, which has several locations in Warsaw that made it seem kind of touristy to us, but who can resist a menu with 30 kinds of dumplings? Jack started with a bowl of żurek, which uses rye flour to give it a sour taste and is always served with egg and boiled sausage. Then of course we followed that up with some pierogi ruskie (Russian dumplings), my favorite kind, which are filled with cheese and potato and covered in bacon, onions, and tons of bacon fat.
